Ingredients
- 200 g chestnuts
- 50 g breadcrumbs
- 1 piece egg
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 piece onion finely chopped
- 1 piece garlic clove finely chopped
- 1 tsp fresh parsley chopped
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- salt and pepper
- flour
Instructions
- 1. If using raw chestnuts, cut a cross into the flat side of the shell. Place the chestnuts in a pot with water and bring the water to a boil. Boil the chestnuts for about 15 to 20 minutes until they are soft. Remove them from the water and peel them. Also remove the thin brown skin under the shell. You can also use pre-cooked chestnuts from the supermarket to save time.
- 2. Place the peeled chestnuts in a bowl. Mash them roughly with a fork or a potato masher. Leave some small pieces so that the balls have a nice texture later.
- 3. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a pan. Add the finely chopped onion and garlic to the pan. Fry them over medium heat until they are translucent. This takes about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the fried onion and garlic to the chestnuts.
- 4. Add the egg, breadcrumbs, parsley, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg to the chestnut mixture. Mix everything well until a moldable, slightly sticky mass forms. If the mixture is too dry, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water or milk.
- 5. Form small balls from the mixture. The balls should be about the size of walnuts (approx. 3 cm in diameter). Lightly roll the balls in flour so they keep their shape when baking.
- 6. Preheat the air fryer to 180 °C. Lightly brush the chestnut balls with a little olive oil or spray them with an oil spray. This makes them particularly crispy.
- 7. Place the balls in the basket of the air fryer. Make sure they do not overlap. Bake them at 180 °C for 10 to 12 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy. Gently turn the balls halfway through the time.
- 8. Remove the chestnut balls from the air fryer. Let them cool for a short time. They taste best when warm. Serve them with a yogurt dip or an autumn sauce.
