Ingredients
- 500 g potatoes
- 1 tbsp oil
- ½ tsp paprika powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp pepper
- ½ tsp herbs of choice
Instructions
- 1. Wash the potatoes thoroughly under running water and scrub off any dirt with a brush. For firm-cooking varieties with thin skin, peeling is not necessary as the skin becomes very crispy later. Cut the potatoes into uniform cubes with a side length of 1.5 to 2 cm. Uniform sizes ensure even cooking results.
- 2. Place the potato cubes in a large bowl. Add the olive oil and mix well until every cube is thinly coated with oil. In a small bowl, mix paprika powder, garlic powder, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the potatoes and shake the bowl vigorously so that all sides are evenly seasoned.
- 3. Preheat your air fryer to 200 °C. This helps the potatoes form a crust immediately and prevents them from sticking to the bottom. Place the seasoned potato cubes into the basket. Spread them out in a loose, single layer as much as possible. An overloaded basket disrupts air circulation and results in soft instead of crispy cubes.
- 4. Slide the basket into the preheated air fryer. Cook the potato cubes for 10 minutes at 200 °C. During this time, the starch on the surface begins to gelatinize and the first golden color appears.
- 5. Remove the basket after 10 minutes. Shake it vigorously to turn the cubes. This exposes all sides to the hot air. This step is crucial for an evenly golden-brown and crispy crust all around.
- 6. Slide the basket back into the device. Cook the potato cubes for another 8 to 10 minutes at 200 °C. The exact time depends on the size of the cubes and the power of your device. They are perfect when they are rich golden brown and make a hollow, clacking sound when shaken.
- 7. The stated time is a guideline. Compact air fryer models may need 1-2 minutes less, while large drawer or oven-style devices may need 2-3 minutes longer when fully loaded. Check the browning level after a total of 18 minutes and adjust the remaining time individually.
- 8. Remove the finished, crispy potato cubes from the air fryer. Taste them and add a little more salt if needed. Serve immediately while they are hot and at their crispiest. They pair perfectly as a side dish with meat and fish, in bowls, or simply on their own with a delicious dip.
