  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius (conventional heat).
  2. 2. Peel the parsnips and cut them into thick slices or cubes.
  3. 3. Peel the apples and cut them into small cubes. Finely dice the onion.
  4. 4. Fry the onions and parsnips in the butter in a pan for approx. 5 minutes.
  5. 5. Mix the vegetables with the apple pieces in a baking dish.
  6. 6. Pour the milk over the vegetables and season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  7. 7. Fry the sage leaves in a little oil until crisp and fold them in.
  8. 8. Top the gratin with the cheddar and bake until golden brown for 45 minutes.
