  1. 1. Wash the zucchini and aubergine and cut them into cubes.
  2. 2. Cut the yellow bell pepper into cubes and slice the onion into thin strips.
  3. 3. Heat the olive oil in a large pot and sauté the onions for 3 minutes.
  4. 4. Add the finely chopped garlic and sauté for 1 minute.
  5. 5. Add the aubergine, zucchini, and bell pepper to the pot.
  6. 6. Sauté the vegetables for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. 7. Add the tomatoes and the pearl barley. Stir well.
  8. 8. Let the mixture simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.
  9. 9. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  10. 10. Tear the basil leaves with your hands and fold them into the finished ratatouille.
