1. Peel the potatoes, wash them thoroughly, and cut them into large cubes. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook the potatoes covered over medium heat for about 20–25 minutes until tender.
2. Halve the onions, peel them, and slice them into rings. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté the onions for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
3. After about 15 minutes, add the sausages to the pan and fry them together with the onions until golden brown.
4. Drain the potatoes in a colander and briefly bring the milk to a boil in the pot. Melt the butter in the hot milk. Then return the potatoes to the pot and mash them with a potato masher until smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
5. Serve the mashed potatoes on plates alongside the sausages and the fried onions.
