  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees Celsius with fan.
  2. 2. Grease a baking dish with one tablespoon of soft butter.
  3. 3. Add one tablespoon of raw cane sugar to the dish.
  4. 4. Swirl the dish to distribute the sugar evenly.
  5. 5. Tear the panettone into coarse pieces using your hands.
  6. 6. Ensure the pieces are about two to three centimeters in size.
  7. 7. Distribute the panettone pieces evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  8. 8. Slice the vanilla pod lengthwise.
  9. 9. Scrape the vanilla seeds out of the pod with a knife.
  10. 10. Separate five eggs and reserve the egg whites for another use.
  11. 11. Place the egg yolks, one whole egg, the vanilla seeds, the orange zest, the cream, the milk, and a pinch of salt into a bowl.
  12. 12. Whisk the ingredients in the bowl thoroughly.
  13. 13. Pour the vanilla milk mixture carefully over the panettone pieces.
  14. 14. Stir gently to allow the panettone pieces to absorb the liquid.
  15. 15. Place the baking dish in the oven.
  16. 16. Bake the casserole for about 45 to 55 minutes.
  17. 17. Remove the casserole from the oven when it is golden brown on top.
  18. 18. Let the casserole cool down briefly in the oven or on the stove.
  19. 19. Dust the finished casserole with powdered sugar.
  20. 20. Serve the casserole warm with vanilla ice cream.
