  1. 1. Pour the wine and cherry juice into a pot.
  2. 2. Heat the liquid gently, but do not let it boil.
  3. 3. Remove the pot from the heat.
  4. 4. Rinse the orange thoroughly under hot water.
  5. 5. Grate about one teaspoon of the orange peel finely.
  6. 6. Cut the orange in half.
  7. 7. Squeeze the juice from one half.
  8. 8. Cut the other half into four slices.
  9. 9. Add the freshly squeezed orange juice to the warm wine mixture.
  10. 10. Add the spices and sugar.
  11. 11. Cover the pot.
  12. 12. Let the mixture steep for about 15 minutes.
  13. 13. Stir occasionally.
  14. 14. Strain the punch through a fine sieve.
  15. 15. Reheat the strained punch gently.
  16. 16. Make sure it does not boil.
  17. 17. Pour the punch into glasses.
  18. 18. Add one orange slice to each glass.
  19. 19. Garnish with cocktail cherries on a toothpick if desired.
