  1. 1. Carefully separate the lettuce leaves from each other.
  2. 2. Wash the lettuce leaves thoroughly under running water.
  3. 3. Shake the lettuce dry or pat it with a kitchen towel.
  4. 4. Wash the tomato under cold water.
  5. 5. Slice the tomato into thin, even slices.
  6. 6. Put mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, garlic, and salt into a small bowl.
  7. 7. Stir the ingredients vigorously with a spoon until a homogeneous sauce forms.
  8. 8. Finally, adjust the seasoning of the sauce with a little more salt or spices if necessary.
  9. 9. Heat the butter in a pan over medium heat.
  10. 10. Cut the burger buns in half horizontally.
  11. 11. Place the bun halves with the cut side down into the hot pan.
  12. 12. Toast the buns for about 2 minutes until golden brown.
  13. 13. Remove the buns from the pan and set them aside.
  14. 14. Divide the minced meat into portions of approximately 80 grams each.
  15. 15. Shape each portion into a loose, not too firm ball.
  16. 16. Preheat a cast iron pan on the highest setting.
  17. 17. Add a little oil to the very hot pan.
  18. 18. Place one minced meat ball into the pan.
  19. 19. Immediately press the ball flat with a spatula until it is thin.
  20. 20. Season the flat meat slice (patty) with salt and pepper.
  21. 21. Fry the patty for about 2 to 3 minutes until it has a crust.
  22. 22. Flip the patty once to cook the other side.
  23. 23. Place a slice of cheese on the hot patty.
  24. 24. Continue frying the patty with cheese for another 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese melts.
  25. 25. Remove the finished patty from the pan.
  26. 26. Spread one tablespoon of the prepared sauce on the bottom half of the bun.
  27. 27. Place the smashed patty on the juicy bun.
  28. 28. Add fresh lettuce leaves and tomato slices on top of the patty.
  29. 29. Spread the sauce on the top half of the bun as well.
  30. 30. Place the lid on the burger to close it.
  31. 31. Serve the classic smashed cheeseburger immediately while hot.
