  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius with fan.
  2. 2. Wash the potatoes thoroughly under running water.
  3. 3. Peel the potatoes completely.
  4. 4. Slice the potatoes into very thin slices or use a grater.
  5. 5. Grease a large baking dish with some fat.
  6. 6. Peel one clove of garlic.
  7. 7. Rub the inside of the dish with the garlic clove.
  8. 8. Place the potato slices evenly into the dish.
  9. 9. Season the layers with salt.
  10. 10. Season the layers with pepper.
  11. 11. Season the layers with nutmeg.
  12. 12. Put cream and milk into a separate bowl.
  13. 13. Mix the cream and milk well together.
  14. 14. Season the liquid with salt.
  15. 15. Season the liquid with pepper.
  16. 16. Pour the cream-milk mixture over the potatoes.
  17. 17. Place the dish in the oven for about 20 minutes.
  18. 18. Take the dish out of the oven briefly after 20 minutes.
  19. 19. Sprinkle cheese over the potatoes.
  20. 20. Put the dish back in the oven for another 30 minutes.
  21. 21. Bake the gratin until it is golden brown.
  22. 22. Take the finished baking dish out of the oven.
  23. 23. Let the gratin cool down briefly.
  24. 24. Serve the dish warm.
