  4. 4. Slice the apples and potatoes thinly.

  6. 6. Peel the onion halves.
  7. 7. Cut the onions into fine rings.
  8. 8. Grease a baking dish with butter.
  9. 9. Layer the apple and potato slices alternately in the dish.
  10. 10. Distribute the onion rings between the fruit and vegetable layers.
  11. 11. Season each layer lightly with salt.
  12. 12. Season each layer lightly with pepper.
  13. 13. Wash the thyme.
  14. 14. Shake the thyme dry.
  15. 15. Strip the thyme leaves from the stems.
  16. 16. Finely chop the thyme leaves.

  34. 34. Remove the finished gratin from the oven.
