  1. 1. Remove the hard core from the cabbage and slice the vegetable into thin strips.
  2. 2. Halve the onions, peel them, and dice them finely.
  3. 3. Wash the apples, quarter them, remove the core, and dice the flesh.
  4. 4. Peel the garlic and chop it very finely.
  5. 5. Cut the cheese into small cubes of about one centimeter in size.
  6. 6. Place the ground meat into a large bowl.
  7. 7. Add half of the diced onions, the chopped garlic, the egg, the breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper.
  8. 8. Mix all ingredients thoroughly with your hands or a spoon.
  9. 9. Shape the meat mixture into small balls with a diameter of about two centimeters.
  10. 10. Press a small indentation into the center of each meatball using your thumb.
  11. 11. Place one cheese cube into each indentation.
  12. 12. Seal the opening by firmly pressing the meat around the cheese until no gap is visible.
  13. 13. Heat the oil in a large pan over high heat.
  14. 14. Fry the meatballs for about four minutes until they have a brown color.
  15. 15. Remove the meatballs from the pan and place them on a plate for now.
  16. 16. Add the sliced cabbage and the remaining onions to the still hot pan.
  17. 17. Sauté the vegetables for about three minutes until they start to brown slightly.
  18. 18. Add the apple cubes and cook them along with the vegetables for another two minutes.
  19. 19. Deglaze the vegetables with the vegetable broth.
  20. 20. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar.
  21. 21. Place the prepared meatballs back on top of the cabbage mixture.
  22. 22. Cover the pan and let everything simmer for about ten minutes over medium heat.
  23. 23. Finally, taste the sauce again and adjust with salt and pepper.
  24. 24. Plate the meatballs with the cabbage mixture and serve them hot.
