  2. 2. Wash the fennel bulbs and slice them into thin pieces.
  3. 3. Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin slices (approx. 3 mm thick).
  4. 4. Butter a small baking dish.
  5. 5. Layer potato slices and fennel slices alternately in the dish.
  6. 6. Mix the crème fraiche with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  7. 7. Pour the sauce evenly over the vegetables.
  8. 8. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 60 minutes.
  9. 9. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the gratin.
  10. 10. Bake the dish for another 15 minutes until the cheese is golden brown.
  11. 11. Remove the gratin from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes.
