  1. 1. Peel the onions and slice them into thin rings. Heat the oil in a pot and sauté the onions for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until they become soft. Season with sugar, salt, and pepper, and continue to simmer for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown.
  2. 2. Add the broth and wine, bring to a boil, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Peel the garlic and press it into the soup, then season with lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  3. 3. Preheat the oven to the broil setting.
  4. 4. Pour the onion soup into 4 oven-safe bowls. Place 2 slices of baguette on top of each and sprinkle the cheese evenly over it. Lightly pepper and broil in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes until the cheese is melted. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.
