  1. 1. Peel the onions.
  2. 2. Place them in salted water and boil for about 15 minutes until tender.
  3. 3. Rinse the onions immediately with cold water to stop the cooking process.
  4. 4. Cut off the top lid of the onion.
  5. 5. Carefully hollow out the inside of the onion.
  6. 6. Finely chop the removed onion flesh.
  7. 7. Wash the lentils.
  8. 8. Put the lentils in a pot and cover them with water.
  9. 9. Bring the water to a boil.
  10. 10. Add the thyme.
  11. 11. Cook the lentils for about 10 minutes until al dente.
  12. 12. Add more water if necessary.
  13. 13. Place the cooked lentils and the chopped onion into a bowl.
  14. 14. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius fan-forced.
  15. 15. Brush a baking dish with oil.
  16. 16. Dice the ham finely.
  17. 17. Peel the garlic and chop it finely.
  18. 18. Add the ham, garlic, and egg to the bowl with the lentils.
  19. 19. Mix everything well together.
  20. 20. Season the filling with salt and pepper.
  21. 21. Fill the mixture into the hollowed-out onions.
  22. 22. Place the onion lids back on top.
  23. 23. Drizzle some olive oil over the onions.
  24. 24. Bake the onions in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
  25. 25. Add a little water to the dish if they start to dry out.
