🍽️ Crispy Onion Cake from the Oven

Ingredients
- 300 g flour
- 0.5 cube yeast (21 g)
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp oil
- 500 g bacon (streaky, smoked)
- 2 kg onions
- 400 g sour cream
- 2 eggs
- 1 tbsp caraway seeds
- salt
- pepper (from the mill)
- 0.5 tsp paprika powder
Instructions
- 1. Mix flour, salt, and yeast in a large bowl.
- 2. Dissolve the yeast in 150 milliliters of lukewarm water and stir well.
- 3. Add the yeast-water mixture and the oil to the flour mixture.
- 4. Knead the dough with the beaters of a hand mixer for about 5 minutes.
- 5. Make sure the dough forms bubbles.
- 6. If the dough seems too dry, add a little more water.
- 7. Cover the bowl and place it in a warm spot.
- 8. Let the dough rise for about 1 hour until it has doubled in size.
- 9. Cut the bacon into thin slices.
- 10. Cut the bacon slices into small strips.
- 11. Heat oil in a pan.
- 12. Render and fry the bacon strips over low heat.
- 13. Remove the cooked bacon from the pan and set it aside.
- 14. Peel the onions.
- 15. Slice the onions into thin rings.
- 16. Sauté the onion rings in batches in the remaining bacon fat until soft.
- 17. Let the fried onions cool down slightly.
- 18. Mix sour cream, egg, caraway seeds, salt, pepper, and paprika powder in a bowl.
- 19. Gently fold the cooled bacon and onions into the cream mixture.
- 20. Grease a baking tray with some fat.
- 21. Spread the dough evenly onto the prepared baking tray.
- 22. Distribute the onion-bacon filling evenly over the dough.
- 23. Place the tray into a cold oven.
- 24. Set the oven to 180 degrees.
- 25. Bake the cake for about 40 minutes.
