  1. 1. Put 300 grams of flour and one teaspoon of salt into a large bowl.
  2. 2. Cut 175 grams of margarine into small cubes.
  3. 3. Add the margarine cubes to the flour.
  4. 4. Mix everything well until small crumbs form.
  5. 5. Add four to five tablespoons of cold water.
  6. 6. Knead the dough into a smooth, firm ball.
  7. 7. Divide the dough ball into two halves.
  8. 8. Wrap the halves and put them in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  9. 9. Peel the apples and cut them into quarters.
  10. 10. Remove the core from the apple pieces.
  11. 11. Slice the apple quarters into thin slices.
  12. 12. Mix 100 grams of sugar with the remaining flour.
  13. 13. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt to the sugar mixture.
  14. 14. Gently fold the apple slices into the spice mixture.
  15. 15. Dust a work surface with flour.
  16. 16. Roll out the first dough half slightly larger than the pie dish.
  17. 17. Place the dough circle into the dish.
  18. 18. Press the bottom and edges of the dough firmly.
  19. 19. Trim the excess dough edge.
  20. 20. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the dough base.
  21. 21. Cut the remaining margarine into small pieces and distribute them over the apples.
  22. 22. Roll out the second dough half.
  23. 23. Place the second dough circle over the filling.
  24. 24. Press the edges of the two dough halves together firmly.
  25. 25. Use a spoon handle to create a crimped pattern on the edge.
  26. 26. Cut five to six small slits into the top crust.
  27. 27. Sprinkle the cake with the remaining sugar.
  28. 28. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees (convection 160 degrees or gas mark 2–3).
  29. 29. Bake the cake for about 50 minutes until golden brown.
  30. 30. Cover the cake with baking paper if it gets too dark.
  31. 31. Let the cake cool completely on a wire rack.
