  1. 1. Wash the tomatoes thoroughly.
  2. 2. Remove the hard stem area at the top.
  3. 3. Cut a small cross into the bottom of the tomatoes.
  4. 4. Place the tomatoes in boiling water for about 2 minutes.
  5. 5. Remove the tomatoes immediately and rinse them with cold water.
  6. 6. Peel the skin off the tomatoes.
  7. 7. Cut the peeled tomatoes into small cubes.
  8. 8. Peel the garlic and the shallots.
  9. 9. Cut the garlic and shallots into very fine cubes.
  10. 10. Wash the chili pepper.
  11. 11. Cut the chili pepper in half lengthwise.
  12. 12. Remove the seeds from the chili pepper.
  13. 13. Finely chop the chili pepper.
  14. 14. Heat the oil in a pot.
  15. 15. Add the cubes of shallots, garlic, and chili to the pot.
  16. 16. Add the pine nuts.
  17. 17. Sauté the mixture for 2 to 3 minutes.
  18. 18. Add the tomato cubes to the pot.
  19. 19. Pour in the vegetable broth.
  20. 20. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, sugar, and rosemary.
  21. 21. Let the sauce simmer for about 1 hour over medium heat.
  22. 22. Taste the sauce again and adjust seasoning if needed.
  23. 23. Stir the capers into the finished sauce.
  24. 24. Serve the sauce warm.
