  1. 1. Thoroughly wash the asparagus under running water.
  2. 2. Peel the white asparagus completely and cut off the tough lower ends.
  3. 3. For the green asparagus, peel only the lower third and also cut off the ends.
  4. 4. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add some sugar and butter.
  5. 5. Add the white asparagus to the boiling water and cook it for about 20 minutes.
  6. 6. Add the green asparagus later, as it only needs about 12 to 15 minutes of cooking time.
  7. 7. Remove the asparagus from the water and let it drain well.
  8. 8. Melt the butter in a small pan or saucepan.
  9. 9. Serve the drained asparagus together with the ham and the melted butter.
