  1. 1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) for conventional heating. If using a fan oven, set it to 160°C (320°F). For gas ovens, use setting 2–3.
  2. 2. Roughly chop the chocolate into small pieces.
  3. 3. Fill a pot with some water and heat it until it is hot but not boiling.
  4. 4. Place a heatproof bowl containing the chocolate pieces and butter over the pot. Ensure the bowl does not touch the water.
  5. 5. Let the chocolate and butter melt slowly. Stir occasionally.
  6. 6. Remove the bowl from the pot.
  7. 7. Stir the sugar into the warm chocolate mixture.
  8. 8. Lightly beat the eggs in a separate small bowl.
  9. 9. Add the beaten eggs to the chocolate mixture and stir them in.
  10. 10. Add the cocoa powder and mix it thoroughly into the batter.
  11. 11. Line a 20 cm (8 inch) springform pan with baking paper.
  12. 12. Pour the chocolate batter into the prepared pan.
  13. 13. Flatten the surface of the batter slightly with a spoon or spatula.
  14. 14. Place the pan in the preheated oven.
  15. 15. Bake the cake for 25 to 30 minutes.
  16. 16. Remove the cake from the oven.
  17. 17. Let the cake cool in the pan for 5 minutes.
  18. 18. Release the springform clips.
  19. 19. Run a knife carefully around the edge of the cake to loosen it from the pan.
  20. 20. Remove the ring of the springform.
  21. 21. Carefully turn the cake out onto a serving plate.
  22. 22. Mix powdered sugar and cocoa powder in a small bowl.
  23. 23. Dust the finished cake with the sugar-cocoa mixture.
