  1. 1. Slice the bread rolls into thin pieces.
  2. 2. Peel the apples and cut them into quarters.
  3. 3. Remove the core from the apple quarters.
  4. 4. Cut the cored apples into thin wedges.
  5. 5. Grease a large baking dish or two small dishes with butter.
  6. 6. Place a first layer of bread slices into the dish.
  7. 7. Distribute a portion of the apple wedges evenly over the bread.
  8. 8. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest, and almonds over the layer.
  9. 9. Add another layer of bread and apple slices.
  10. 10. Whisk the milk, eggs, a pinch of salt, and the remaining sugar (about 3 tablespoons) in a separate bowl.
  11. 11. Pour the egg-milk mixture evenly over the layers in the dish.
  12. 12. Distribute small pats of butter on the surface.
  13. 13. Preheat the oven to 200 °C (180 °C for fan-assisted or gas mark 3).
  14. 14. Bake the pudding for about 40 minutes until golden brown.
  15. 15. Dust the finished pudding with powdered sugar before serving.
