  1. 1. Peel the onion and cut it in half.
  2. 2. Cut the onion halves into thin strips.
  3. 3. Heat the lard in a pot.
  4. 4. Fry the onion strips for 1 to 2 minutes until they are soft and translucent.
  5. 5. Take the sauerkraut out of the package and squeeze it well so it is not too wet.
  6. 6. Add the drained sauerkraut to the pot with the onion.
  7. 7. Deglaze the mixture with the wine.
  8. 8. Pour in some broth.
  9. 9. Add the bay leaves and juniper berries to the kraut.
  10. 10. Cover the pot with a lid.
  11. 11. Let the sauerkraut simmer on low heat for about 40 minutes.
  12. 12. Stir the kraut occasionally.
  13. 13. Add a little more broth if it becomes too dry.
  14. 14. Season the finished sauerkraut with salt, cumin, and pepper to taste.
  15. 15. Serve the dish warm.
