  1. 1. Place the quark in a sieve and let it drain for one hour.
  2. 2. Whisk the soft butter, sugar, vanilla sugar, salt, and egg with a whisk until the mixture becomes frothy.
  3. 3. Fold in the drained quark, lemon zest, semolina, and breadcrumbs into the butter mixture.
  4. 4. Let the dough rest covered for 30 minutes.
  5. 5. Bring water with salt to a boil in a large pot.
  6. 6. Dip a tablespoon into the hot water to wet it.
  7. 7. Scoop small portions of the quark mixture with the wet spoon.
  8. 8. Smooth the surface of the portion with a second, also wet tablespoon.
  9. 9. Gently drop the formed balls into the boiling salted water.
  10. 10. Release the balls from the first spoon using the second spoon.
  11. 11. Repeat this process until all the quark mixture is used up.
  12. 12. Turn off the heat and let the dumplings rest in the open pot for about 12 minutes to finish cooking.
  13. 13. Remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon and let them drain.
  14. 14. Mix orange juice, butter, and poppy seed cake crumbs in a pan.
  15. 15. Bring the mixture to a boil once.
  16. 16. Pour the warm poppy seed butter over the finished quark balls.
