  1. 1. Put flour, butter cubes, sugar, vanilla sugar, orange zest, and egg into a bowl.
  2. 2. Chop the ingredients roughly with a large knife.
  3. 3. Add the rum.
  4. 4. Knead everything into a smooth dough.
  5. 5. Shape the dough into a ball.
  6. 6. Wrap the ball in cling film.
  7. 7. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  8. 8. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees.
  9. 9. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 3 millimeters thick.
  10. 10. Cut pretzel shapes out of the dough using cookie cutters.
  11. 11. Alternatively: Roll thin dough strips into pencil-thick coils and shape them into pretzels.
  12. 12. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  13. 13. Place the pretzels on the tray.
  14. 14. Bake the pretzels for 10 to 12 minutes.
  15. 15. Mix powdered sugar with rum or orange liqueur to make a glaze.
  16. 16. Optionally color the glaze with food coloring.
  17. 17. Brush the cooled pretzels with the glaze.
