Ingredients
- 375 g flour
- 150 g sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla sugar
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 lemon (unwaxed)
- 250 g butter
- 1 egg
- 200 g powdered sugar
- food coloring (to taste)
- colored sugar (for sprinkling)
Instructions
- 1. Mix flour, sugar, vanilla sugar, salt, and the grated zest of half a lemon in a bowl.
- 2. Add the butter in pieces and roughly cut it in with a dough scraper.
- 3. Work the egg into the mixture and knead everything quickly into a smooth dough.
- 4. Place the dough in the refrigerator and let it chill for at least 30 minutes.
- 5. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius using hot air mode.
- 6. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
- 7. Dust your work surface with flour and roll out the dough to about 3 millimeters thick.
- 8. Cut out various shapes such as stars, bells, or moons.
- 9. Poke a small hole in each cookie with a skewer so you can hang them later.
- 10. Bake the cookies until golden brown for 8 to 12 minutes.
- 11. Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack.
- 12. Squeeze the remaining lemon and sift the powdered sugar into a bowl.
- 13. Stir lemon juice and powdered sugar together to form a thick glaze.
- 14. Divide the glaze into several small portions.
- 15. Tint each portion very lightly with food coloring to match the colorful sugar.
- 16. Glaze the cooled cookies, but leave the hanging hole uncovered.
- 17. Immediately sprinkle colorful sugar onto the wet glaze or press the edges of the cookies into the sugar.
- 18. Let the decorated cookies dry on the rack.
