  1. 1. Warm up half of the milk until it is lukewarm.
  2. 2. Mix the lukewarm milk with the yeast, a pinch of cane sugar, and a spoonful of flour until smooth.
  3. 3. Cover the bowl and place it in a warm spot.
  4. 4. Let the dough rise for 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. 5. Knead the remaining milk, the rest of the cane sugar, the flour, a pinch of salt, the egg yolk, 50 grams of softened butter, and the ground almonds into the dough.
  6. 6. Knead the dough until it is smooth.
  7. 7. Cover the dough again.
  8. 8. Let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. 9. Shape the dough into a roll with a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters.
  10. 10. Cut the roll into slices about 3 centimeters thick.
  11. 11. Place the slices close together in a baking dish.
  12. 12. Lightly grease the dish if necessary.
  13. 13. Cover the dish.
  14. 14. Let the dumplings rise for another 15 minutes.
  15. 15. Melt the remaining butter.
  16. 16. Brush the dumplings with the melted butter.
  17. 17. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees conventional heat.

  20. 20. Mix the cornstarch with about 50 milliliters of water until smooth.
  21. 21. Pour the remaining milk into a saucepan.
  22. 22. Stir the cornstarch-water mixture into the milk.
  23. 23. Bring the mixture to a brief boil while stirring constantly.

  25. 25. Let the sauce simmer over low heat.
  26. 26. Stir continuously until the sauce becomes thick.
  27. 27. Halve the vanilla pod lengthwise.
  28. 28. Scrape out the seeds with a knife.
  29. 29. Stir the vanilla seeds into the vanilla sauce.
  30. 30. Remove the dumplings from the oven.
  31. 31. Turn the dumplings out of the dish.
  32. 32. Separate the individual dumplings.
  33. 33. Optionally dust the dumplings with powdered sugar.
  34. 34. Serve the dumplings with the warm vanilla sauce.
