  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius with top and bottom heat.
  2. 2. Peel the garlic cloves and cut them into coarse pieces.
  3. 3. Place the garlic pieces into a mortar.
  4. 4. Sprinkle the garlic with a little salt.
  5. 5. Mash the garlic and salt together into a fine paste.
  6. 6. Add the basil to the garlic paste.
  7. 7. Mash the basil into a fine paste as well.
  8. 8. Stir 4 tablespoons of olive oil into the herb mixture.
  9. 9. Wash the tomatoes thoroughly.
  10. 10. Remove the stem area from the tomatoes.
  11. 11. Slice the tomatoes into thin rounds.
  12. 12. Wash the bell peppers.
  13. 13. Halve the bell peppers.
  14. 14. Remove the seeds from the bell peppers.
  15. 15. Cut the bell peppers into thin strips.
  16. 16. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan.
  17. 17. Sauté the pepper strips for 5 minutes over medium heat.
  18. 18. Drain the mozzarella cheese.
  19. 19. Cube the mozzarella cheese.
  20. 20. Cook the pasta in plenty of salted water until al dente.
  21. 21. Drain the pasta.
  22. 22. Place the pasta into a bowl.
  23. 23. Mix the pasta with the garlic-basil pesto.
  24. 24. Add the olives and pepper strips to the pasta mixture.
  25. 25. Stir everything well together.
  26. 26. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  27. 27. Line a round baking dish with the tomato slices.
  28. 28. Place half of the pasta mixture into the prepared dish.
  29. 29. Distribute the cubed mozzarella evenly over the pasta layer.
  30. 30. Place the remaining pasta mixture on top.
  31. 31. Place the remaining tomato slices on top of the gratin as a cover.
  32. 32. Place the dish in the preheated oven.
  33. 33. Bake the gratin for about 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
  34. 34. Remove the gratin from the oven.
  35. 35. Let it rest briefly before serving.
