🍝 Greek Pasta Bake Pastitsio

Ingredients
- 1 large onion
- 1 can tomatoes
- parsley
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 1 kg minced meat (beef or lamb)
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- salt, pepper from the mill
- 120 g Kefalotyri
- 1 egg
- 500 g macaroni
- 50 g butter
- breadcrumbs
- 6 tbsp butter
- 5 tbsp flour
- 750 ml lukewarm milk
- salt, pepper from the mill
- nutmeg
- 3 eggs
Instructions
- 1. Peel the onion.
- 2. Take the tomatoes out of the can and chop them finely.
- 3. Wash the parsley.
- 4. Pluck the parsley leaves from the stems and chop them finely.
- 5. Heat the oil in a pot.
- 6. Grate the onion finely into the hot oil and sauté briefly.
- 7. Add the minced meat.
- 8. Fry the meat thoroughly while stirring constantly.
- 9. Add the chopped tomatoes including their liquid to the meat.
- 10. Stir the tomatoes into the meat.
- 11. Stir in the tomato paste.
- 12. Sprinkle the chopped parsley over it.
- 13. Season the sauce with salt and pepper.
- 14. Let the sauce simmer covered on low heat for 30 to 35 minutes.
- 15. Simmer until the sauce has thickened.
- 16. Remove the pot from the heat.
- 17. Let the meat sauce cool down.
- 18. Grate the cheese.
- 19. Whisk the egg in a small bowl.
- 20. Mix the whisked egg with about one quarter of the grated cheese.
- 21. Stir the egg-cheese mixture into the cooled meat sauce.
- 22. Add the macaroni to boiling salted water.
- 23. Cook the pasta for 10 minutes until al dente.
- 24. Drain the pasta.
- 25. Rinse the pasta with cold water.
- 26. Let the pasta drain.
- 27. Stir the butter and the remaining cheese into the drained pasta.
- 28. Preheat the oven to 200 °C.
- 29. Melt the butter in a pot.
- 30. Stir the flour into the butter gradually using a whisk.
- 31. Lightly sauté the flour mixture.
- 32. Stir in the milk gradually on low heat.
- 33. Let the sauce simmer until it is creamy.
- 34. Remove the sauce from the heat.
- 35. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- 36. Whisk the eggs.
- 37. Stir the whisked eggs into the sauce.
- 38. Grease a baking dish (approx. 30 cm x 40 cm).
- 39. Coat the dish with breadcrumbs.
- 40. Spread half of the macaroni evenly into the dish.
- 41. Spread the minced meat evenly over the pasta.
- 42. Cover the meat with the remaining macaroni.
- 43. Spread the béchamel sauce evenly over the surface.
- 44. Place the dish in the oven.
- 45. Bake the pasta bake for about 40 minutes.
- 46. Bake until the surface is golden brown.
