  1. 1. Put the dry yeast, one teaspoon of sugar, and half of the lukewarm milk into a small bowl.
  2. 2. Stir the ingredients briefly and let the mixture stand for ten minutes until it becomes slightly foamy.
  3. 3. Put the flour into a large mixing bowl.
  4. 4. Add the prepared yeast milk, the remaining sugar, the butter, the rest of the milk, the egg, the poppy seeds, and a pinch of salt to the bowl.
  5. 5. Knead the ingredients by hand or with a food processor until you have a smooth dough.
  6. 6. Cover the bowl and place it in a warm spot.
  7. 7. Let the dough rise for about one hour until it has increased significantly in size.
  8. 8. Sprinkle some flour onto a clean work surface.
  9. 9. Take out the dough and knead it briefly.
  10. 10. Divide the dough into portions and roll each portion into a roll as thick as your finger.
  11. 11. Cut the rolls into pieces about two centimeters long.
  12. 12. Place the dough pieces on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
  13. 13. Preheat the oven.
  14. 14. Bake the pastries at 180 degrees Celsius conventional heat (or 160 degrees with fan, gas level 2 to 3) for about ten minutes.
  15. 15. Remove the tray from the oven.
  16. 16. Let the pastries cool down completely on the tray.
