🍽️ Lithuanian Christmas Poppy Seed Sticks

Ingredients
- 0.5 packet dry yeast (4 g)
- 50 g raw cane sugar
- 100 ml milk (3.5% fat)
- 200 g spelt flour type 630
- 1 tbsp spelt flour type 630 (for working)
- 2 tbsp liquid butter (15 g each)
- 1 egg (S)
- 3 tbsp blue poppy seeds (10 g each)
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- 1. Put the dry yeast, one teaspoon of sugar, and half of the lukewarm milk into a small bowl.
- 2. Stir the ingredients briefly and let the mixture stand for ten minutes until it becomes slightly foamy.
- 3. Put the flour into a large mixing bowl.
- 4. Add the prepared yeast milk, the remaining sugar, the butter, the rest of the milk, the egg, the poppy seeds, and a pinch of salt to the bowl.
- 5. Knead the ingredients by hand or with a food processor until you have a smooth dough.
- 6. Cover the bowl and place it in a warm spot.
- 7. Let the dough rise for about one hour until it has increased significantly in size.
- 8. Sprinkle some flour onto a clean work surface.
- 9. Take out the dough and knead it briefly.
- 10. Divide the dough into portions and roll each portion into a roll as thick as your finger.
- 11. Cut the rolls into pieces about two centimeters long.
- 12. Place the dough pieces on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
- 13. Preheat the oven.
- 14. Bake the pastries at 180 degrees Celsius conventional heat (or 160 degrees with fan, gas level 2 to 3) for about ten minutes.
- 15. Remove the tray from the oven.
- 16. Let the pastries cool down completely on the tray.
