  1. 1. Wash the potatoes thoroughly.
  2. 2. Cook the potatoes in salted water for about 30 minutes until tender.
  3. 3. Drain the water.
  4. 4. Peel the warm potatoes.
  5. 5. Let the potatoes cool down completely.
  6. 6. Slice the cooled potatoes into thin rounds.
  7. 7. Take a baking dish or a springform pan.
  8. 8. Grease the dish with 2 teaspoons of butter.
  9. 9. Peel the onion.
  10. 10. Dice the onion finely.
  11. 11. Wash the dill.
  12. 12. Shake the dill dry.
  13. 13. Strip the dill leaves from the stems.
  14. 14. Chop the dill coarsely.
  15. 15. Place a first layer of potato slices into the prepared dish.
  16. 16. Place a few slices of salmon on top of the potatoes.
  17. 17. Sprinkle some dill over the salmon.
  18. 18. Sprinkle some onion over the salmon.
  19. 19. Cover the filling with more potato slices.
  20. 20. Repeat the layering until all ingredients are used up.
  21. 21. Finish the dish with a top layer of potatoes.
  22. 22. Whisk the milk with the cream.
  23. 23. Add the eggs and whisk everything well.
  24. 24. Season the liquid with a pinch of salt.
  25. 25. Season the liquid with a pinch of pepper.
  26. 26. Pour the milk-egg mixture evenly over the layered potatoes.
  27. 27. Sprinkle butter flakes evenly over the surface.
  28. 28. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (convection 160 °C or gas mark 2–3).
  29. 29. Bake the gratin for about 45 minutes in the preheated oven.
  30. 30. Remove the gratin when it is golden brown.
