  1. 1. Peel the potatoes and wash them thoroughly.
  2. 2. Cut the potatoes into large cubes.
  3. 3. Place the potato cubes into a large pot.
  4. 4. Cover the potatoes completely with water.
  5. 5. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water.
  6. 6. Bring the water to a boil.
  7. 7. Reduce the heat to a medium setting.
  8. 8. Cover the pot with a lid.
  9. 9. Let the potatoes cook for about 20 minutes.
  10. 10. Drain the potatoes.
  11. 11. Catch the cooking water in a bowl.
  12. 12. Pour the milk into a small saucepan.
  13. 13. Heat the milk.
  14. 14. Mash the potatoes very finely using a potato masher.
  15. 15. Add the warm milk to the potatoes.
  16. 16. Add the sour cream to the potatoes.
  17. 17. Stir everything well with a whisk.
  18. 18. Optionally add 100 to 150 milliliters of the saved cooking water if you prefer a creamier consistency.
  19. 19. Season the mash with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  20. 20. Serve the mashed potatoes.
