  5. 5. Arrange the potato slices in the dish in an overlapping, shingle-like pattern.
  6. 6. Mix cream, grated cheese, crème fraîche, and your chosen herbs in a bowl.
  7. 7. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and ground nutmeg.
  8. 8. Pour the sauce over the potatoes. Ensure they are just covered; adjust the amount of cream if necessary.
  9. 9. Bake the gratin in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes until golden brown.
  10. 10. Turn on the grill for the last 10 minutes if you want a crispy, browned top layer.
