  1. 1. Peel the potatoes and wash them thoroughly.
  2. 2. Slice the potatoes into very thin slices or use a grater.
  3. 3. Peel the garlic cloves and press the garlic through a garlic press.
  4. 4. Wash the thyme sprigs and shake them dry.
  5. 5. Pluck the small thyme leaves from the stems.
  6. 6. Mix the cream with the pressed garlic and the thyme leaves.
  7. 7. Stir the grated cheese into the cream mixture.
  8. 8. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and a pinch of ground nutmeg.
  9. 9. Place the potato slices in a baking dish in an overlapping circular pattern like roof tiles.
  10. 10. Pour the cream-cheese mixture evenly over the layered potatoes.
  11. 11. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius conventional heat (or 180 degrees Celsius fan-forced or gas mark 2 to 3).
  12. 12. Bake the gratin in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  13. 13. Remove the gratin from the oven and serve it immediately.
