  1. 1. Peel the potatoes and wash them thoroughly.
  2. 2. Slice the potatoes into very thin slices or use a grater.
  3. 3. Peel the garlic cloves.
  4. 4. Press the garlic through a press or chop it finely.
  5. 5. Wash the thyme sprigs under running water.
  6. 6. Shake them dry so that no water remains on them.
  7. 7. Pluck the small thyme leaves from the stems.
  8. 8. Mix the cream with the prepared garlic.
  9. 9. Add the plucked thyme leaves to the cream mixture.
  10. 10. Stir the grated cheese into the cream.
  11. 11. Season the mixture with a pinch of salt.
  12. 12. Add freshly ground pepper.
  13. 13. Grate some fresh nutmeg into the sauce.
  14. 14. Place the potato slices in a baking dish in an overlapping shingle pattern.
  15. 15. Pour the cream-cheese mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  16. 16. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius conventional heat.
  17. 17. Bake the gratin in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes.
  18. 18. The gratin is ready when it is golden brown and crispy.
  19. 19. Carefully remove the dish from the oven.
  20. 20. Serve the potato gratin hot at the table.
