  1. 1. Put the wheat flour (Type 1050), baking soda, baking powder, and salt into a large bowl.
  2. 2. Sift the dry ingredients through a sieve into the bowl.
  3. 3. Mix the sifted flour with the wholemeal flour.
  4. 4. Pour the buttermilk into the bowl.
  5. 5. Crack the egg into the bowl.
  6. 6. Stir all ingredients vigorously until a dough forms.
  7. 7. Sprinkle some flour onto your work surface.
  8. 8. Place the dough onto the floured surface.
  9. 9. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes.
  10. 10. Stop kneading when the dough is smooth and pliable.
  11. 11. Shape the dough into a round loaf.
  12. 12. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  13. 13. Place the loaf onto the prepared tray.
  14. 14. Preheat the oven to 200 °C (180 °C fan or gas mark 3).
  15. 15. Slide the tray onto the second rack from the bottom in the oven.
  16. 16. Bake the bread for 40 to 45 minutes.
  17. 17. Take the bread out of the oven.
  18. 18. Place the bread on a wire rack or cake rack.
  19. 19. Let the bread cool completely before slicing it.
