  1. 1. Warm honey, syrup, and butter in a pot over low heat until the butter is completely melted.
  2. 2. Let the honey-butter mixture cool down until it reaches room temperature.
  3. 3. Mix flour, orange zest, and ground cloves in a large bowl.
  4. 4. Stir the cooled honey-butter mixture into the flour mixture.
  5. 5. Dissolve saleratus (a leavening agent) in a little water and knead this solution into the dough.
  6. 6. Cover the dough and let it rest at room temperature for 24 hours.
  7. 7. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
  8. 8. Grease a baking sheet with a little butter.
  9. 9. Dust a work surface with flour and roll out the dough to about half a centimeter thick.
  10. 10. Cut out stars and hearts from the dough using cookie cutters.
  11. 11. Place the heart shapes on the prepared baking sheet.
  12. 12. Bake the cookies on the middle rack for about 12 minutes until golden yellow.
  13. 13. Let the cookies cool on a wire rack.
  14. 14. Dust the cooled cookies with powdered sugar and serve.
