🍽️ Classic Housewife-Style Herring Salad

Ingredients
- 4 Matjes double fillets
- 1 mild onion
- 1 stalk leek
- 2 small, red-skinned apples
- 100 g sour cream
- 100 g yogurt
- 50 g mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 dash lemon juice
- salt
- 1 pinch sugar
- pepper (from the mill)
- freshly chopped dill (for garnishing)
Instructions
- 1. Rinse the herring fillets briefly under running water.
- 2. Pat the fillets dry with a kitchen towel.
- 3. Cut the fillets into small, bite-sized pieces.
- 4. Peel the onion and cut it in half.
- 5. Cut the onion halves into thin strips.
- 6. Wash the leek thoroughly.
- 7. Remove the green tops and the root end.
- 8. Slice the white part of the leek into thin rings.
- 9. Wash the apples.
- 10. Peel the apples completely.
- 11. Cut the apples into quarters.
- 12. Remove the core from each apple quarter.
- 13. Dice the apple pieces finely.
- 14. Put the sour cream into a bowl.
- 15. Add the yogurt.
- 16. Add the mayonnaise.
- 17. Pour in the vinegar.
- 18. Squeeze the lemon juice into the mixture.
- 19. Stir the sauce until smooth and creamy.
- 20. Season the sauce with salt.
- 21. Add a little sugar.
- 22. Pepper the sauce to taste.
- 23. Fold in the prepared herring pieces into the sauce.
- 24. Add the sliced onions.
- 25. Add the leek rings to the bowl.
- 26. Add the diced apples.
- 27. Gently mix all ingredients together.
- 28. Taste the salad again and adjust seasoning.
- 29. Sprinkle the finished salad with fresh dill.
- 30. Serve the salad with fresh bread.
