  1. 1. Put the flour into a large bowl.
  2. 2. Make a well in the center of the flour.
  3. 3. Crumble the yeast into the well.
  4. 4. Add one tablespoon of full cane sugar.
  5. 5. Pour in half of the lukewarm milk.
  6. 6. Stir the mixture until smooth.
  7. 7. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel.
  8. 8. Let the pre-dough rise for 15 minutes in a warm place.
  9. 9. Add the remaining full cane sugar to the bowl.
  10. 10. Pour in the remaining lukewarm milk.
  11. 11. Add the butter to the bowl.
  12. 12. Add the vanilla sugar to the bowl.
  13. 13. Crack the egg into the bowl.
  14. 14. Knead everything into a smooth dough using the dough hooks of a hand mixer.
  15. 15. Cover the bowl again.
  16. 16. Let the dough rise for 35 minutes in a warm place.
  17. 17. Wait until the volume of the dough has increased significantly.
  18. 18. Sprinkle some flour on a clean work surface.
  19. 19. Take out the dough and knead it briefly.
  20. 20. Divide the dough into three equal portions.
  21. 21. Shape each portion into a long roll.
  22. 22. Braid the three rolls together into a plait.
  23. 23. Press the ends of the plait together firmly.
  24. 24. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  25. 25. Place the plait on the prepared tray.
  26. 26. Let the plait rise for another 5 minutes.
  27. 27. Separate the egg yolk from the egg white.
  28. 28. Whisk the egg yolk with the condensed milk.
  29. 29. Brush the plait with the egg yolk and milk mixture.
  30. 30. Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan forced 160°C or gas mark 2-3).
  31. 31. Bake the plait in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
