  1. 1. Preheat a large pot on the stove.
  2. 2. Peel the onion and cut it into small cubes.
  3. 3. Add the cooking fat to the hot pot.
  4. 4. Sauté the onion cubes until soft, but do not brown them.
  5. 5. Add the green barley and sauté it briefly until it looks slightly translucent.
  6. 6. Deglaze the mixture with the broth.
  7. 7. Add the bay leaves to the soup.
  8. 8. Let everything simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. 9. Thoroughly wash the potatoes and vegetables.
  10. 10. Remove any inedible parts from the ingredients.
  11. 11. Cut the potatoes and vegetables (except the chard) into small pieces.
  12. 12. Add the cut potatoes and vegetables to the broth.
  13. 13. Let the stew cook for another 20 minutes.
  14. 14. Chop the chard.
  15. 15. Add the chard to the pot 5 minutes before the cooking time ends.
  16. 16. Let the chard cook along with the rest of the stew.
  17. 17. Remove the bay leaves from the soup.
  18. 18. Season the stew with salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste.
  19. 19. Portion the soup into small bowls.
  20. 20. Serve the stew hot.
