  1. 1. Put butter, sugar, and molasses into a saucepan.
  2. 2. Melt the mixture over low heat.
  3. 3. Let the mixture cool down briefly.
  4. 4. Add flour, baking powder, salt, spices, and one egg to a large bowl.
  5. 5. Pour the cooled syrup mixture over the dry ingredients.
  6. 6. Knead everything into a firm dough.
  7. 7. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
  8. 8. Ensure the dough is firm and moldable.
  9. 9. Dust a work surface with flour.
  10. 10. Roll out the dough to about 4 mm thickness.
  11. 11. Cut out stars and fir trees using cookie cutters.
  12. 12. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
  13. 13. Use a wooden stick to poke a small hole in cookies intended for the tree.
  14. 14. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (convection 160 °C or gas mark 2–3).
  15. 15. Bake the cookies for about 15 minutes.
  16. 16. Remove the tray from the oven.
  17. 17. Let the cookies cool down completely.
  18. 18. Mix powdered sugar with lemon juice to form a thick glaze.
  19. 19. Brush the cooled cookies with the glaze.
  20. 20. Decorate the cookies with lines as desired.
  21. 21. Immediately sprinkle the wet glaze with sugar pearls.
