  1. 1. Place the pearl onions in a bowl.
  2. 2. Pour boiling water over them.
  3. 3. Let them sit for ten minutes.
  4. 4. Rinse the onions under cold water.
  5. 5. Peel the onions carefully.
  6. 6. Do not cut off the root ends so the onions do not fall apart during cooking.
  7. 7. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan.
  8. 8. Lightly fry the onions all around in it.
  9. 9. Shake the pan frequently while doing so.
  10. 10. Make sure they only brown very gently.
  11. 11. Add the honey to the pan.
  12. 12. Let the honey caramelize briefly.
  13. 13. Deglaze the pan with the balsamic vinegar.
  14. 14. Add the Marsala wine.
  15. 15. Pour in the broth.
  16. 16. Cover the pan.
  17. 17. Simmer the onions over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes.
  18. 18. Remove the lid.
  19. 19. Continue cooking the onions in the open pot.
  20. 20. Stir frequently while doing so.
  21. 21. Cook until the sauce is thick.
  22. 22. Season the onions with salt and pepper.
  23. 23. Serve the onions lukewarm.
