  1. 1. Rinse the oranges under hot water and dry them.
  2. 2. Peel the thin skin from both oranges using a vegetable peeler.
  3. 3. Squeeze both oranges and collect the juice.
  4. 4. Squeeze the lemons.
  5. 5. Add the lemon juice and about 2 liters of water to a large bowl.
  6. 6. Peel the onions.
  7. 7. Cut the onions into thin strips.
  8. 8. Remove the tough outer leaves from the artichokes.
  9. 9. Peel the stems of the artichokes generously with a vegetable peeler.
  10. 10. Quarter the artichokes.
  11. 11. Remove the fuzzy choke from the flower base.
  12. 12. Place the prepared artichokes immediately into the lemon water mixture.
  13. 13. This prevents them from turning brown.
  14. 14. Heat the oil in a pot.
  15. 15. Sauté the onion strips until translucent.
  16. 16. Rinse the basil.
  17. 17. Shake the basil dry.
  18. 18. Add the basil to the onion vegetables.
  19. 19. Add the orange peel and orange juice to the pot.
  20. 20. Pour in the vegetable broth.
  21. 21. Season with some salt.
  22. 22. Add peppercorns.
  23. 23. Drain the artichokes.
  24. 24. Add the artichokes to the pot.
  25. 25. Bring everything to a boil over medium heat.
  26. 26. Reduce the heat to low.
  27. 27. Simmer the artichokes covered for about 15 minutes.
  28. 28. Lift the artichokes out of the broth with a slotted spoon.
  29. 29. Serve the artichokes hot or cold.
