  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius with top and bottom heat.
  2. 2. Grease a roasting pan or baking tray with some fat.
  3. 3. Peel the onions and cut them into eight equal pieces.
  4. 4. Remove the core from the apples and cut them into quarters.
  5. 5. Place the onions and apple wedges into the prepared dish.
  6. 6. Put the fruit and vegetables in the oven for about 20 minutes.
  7. 7. Whisk the balsamic vinegar with the juice in a small bowl.
  8. 8. Take the dish out of the oven and pour the vinegar-juice mixture over it.
  9. 9. Gently fold the ingredients to ensure everything is well coated.
  10. 10. Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the mixture.
  11. 11. Roast the apples and onions in the oven for another 15 to 20 minutes.
  12. 12. Turn the pieces repeatedly during the baking time so they caramelize evenly.
