Ingredients
- 1 clove garlic
- 800 g firm-cooking potatoes
- 2 apples
- 300 ml whipping cream
- 100 g grated cheese (e.g. Gruyère, Emmentaler)
- 50 g crème fraîche
- salt
- nutmeg (freshly grated)
- pepper (from the mill)
Instructions
- 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius using the top and bottom heat setting.
- 2. Peel the garlic clove. Rub the baking dish vigorously with the cut surfaces of the garlic to infuse it with flavor.
- 3. Wash and peel the potatoes. Slice or shave them into very thin pieces.
- 4. Peel the apples. Cut them into quarters and remove the core.
- 5. Slice the apple quarters into thin pieces as well.
- 6. Layer the potato and apple slices evenly in the prepared dish, alternating between them.
- 7. Whisk the cream, cheese, and crème fraîche together in a separate bowl until smooth.
- 8. Season the cream mixture with salt, nutmeg, and pepper.
- 9. Pour the seasoned cream mixture over the vegetables and fruit in the dish. Ensure everything is almost completely covered. Adjust the amount of cream slightly if necessary.
- 10. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake the gratin for about 50 minutes until golden brown.
- 11. Cover the gratin with aluminum foil if it starts to become too dark before it is fully baked.
