  3. 3. Sauté the onions over medium heat for about 10 to 15 minutes until soft, stirring regularly.
  4. 4. Season the onions with sugar, salt, and pepper.
  5. 5. Simmer the onions for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized.
  6. 6. Pour the broth and wine over the onions.
  7. 7. Bring the soup to a boil.
  8. 8. Let the soup simmer for about 15 minutes.
  9. 9. Peel the garlic and press it directly into the soup.
  10. 10. Season the soup with lemon juice, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  11. 11. Preheat the oven to 240 degrees Celsius with the grill function.
  12. 12. Fill the onion soup into four ovenproof soup bowls.
  13. 13. Place one slice of baguette on top of the soup in each bowl.
  14. 14. Distribute the cheese evenly over the bread slices.
  15. 15. Bake the soups in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  16. 16. Serve the soups immediately with freshly ground pepper.
