🍽️ Classic French Onion Soup

Ingredients
- 600 g onions
- 2 tbsp sunflower oil
- 2 tsp sugar
- salt
- pepper (from the mill)
- 800 ml meat broth
- 150 ml dry white wine
- 2 garlic cloves
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp freshly chopped thyme
- 4 slices baguette
- 100 g freshly grated Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- 1. Peel the onions and slice them into thin rings.
- 2. Heat the oil in a pot.
- 3. Sauté the onions over medium heat for about 10 to 15 minutes until soft, stirring regularly.
- 4. Season the onions with sugar, salt, and pepper.
- 5. Simmer the onions for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized.
- 6. Pour the broth and wine over the onions.
- 7. Bring the soup to a boil.
- 8. Let the soup simmer for about 15 minutes.
- 9. Peel the garlic and press it directly into the soup.
- 10. Season the soup with lemon juice, salt, pepper, and thyme.
- 11. Preheat the oven to 240 degrees Celsius with the grill function.
- 12. Fill the onion soup into four ovenproof soup bowls.
- 13. Place one slice of baguette on top of the soup in each bowl.
- 14. Distribute the cheese evenly over the bread slices.
- 15. Bake the soups in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
- 16. Serve the soups immediately with freshly ground pepper.
