  1. 1. Grind the walnut kernels into a fine meal.
  2. 2. Dice the figs into very small cubes.
  3. 3. Rinse the orange under hot water and pat it dry.
  4. 4. Finely grate the outer zest of the orange.
  5. 5. Cut the orange in half and squeeze out the juice.
  6. 6. Mix the butter, sugar, salt, and orange zest together using a hand mixer.
  7. 7. Stir the eggs into the butter-sugar mixture.
  8. 8. Add the flour and baking powder.
  9. 9. Add the ground nuts, cranberries, cocoa, and cardamom.
  10. 10. Knead all ingredients together to form a firm dough.
  11. 11. Place the dough on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
  12. 12. Cover the dough with cling film.
  13. 13. Roll out the dough flat while it is covered with the film.
  14. 14. Remove the cling film from the dough.
  15. 15. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (160 °C for fan-assisted or gas mark 2–3).
  16. 16. Bake the pastry for approx. 30 minutes in the oven.
  17. 17. Drizzle the hot pastry immediately with the orange juice.
  18. 18. Let the juice soak in for 5 minutes.
  19. 19. Cut the pastry into bars.
  20. 20. Let the bars cool down on the work surface.
