Ingredients
- 350 g red lentils (hulled)
- 1 red chili pepper
- 1 onion
- 2 garlic cloves
- 2 tbsp ghee (or clarified butter)
- 0.5 tsp turmeric powder
- 0.25 tsp chili powder
- 0.5 tsp paprika powder
- 0.5 tsp ground cumin
- 0.5 tsp ground coriander seeds
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 bay leaf
- salt
Instructions
- 1. Place the lentils in a bowl and rinse them thoroughly until the water runs clear. Then let the lentils drain well in a sieve.
- 2. Wash the chili pepper, remove the stem, and chop it finely. Peel the onion and garlic and dice them finely. Sauté everything together with the chili for 1 to 2 minutes in hot ghee (clarified butter).
- 3. Add the spices and let them sauté briefly. Add the lentils and stir briefly. Pour in about 1 liter of water and the bay leaf. Simmer the mixture covered on medium heat for about 40 minutes on low heat.
- 4. Stir the dal occasionally. If it becomes too thick, add a little water. Season with salt and serve.
