  1. 1. Place the lentils in a bowl and rinse them thoroughly until the water runs clear. Then let the lentils drain well in a sieve.
  2. 2. Wash the chili pepper, remove the stem, and chop it finely. Peel the onion and garlic and dice them finely. Sauté everything together with the chili for 1 to 2 minutes in hot ghee (clarified butter).
  3. 3. Add the spices and let them sauté briefly. Add the lentils and stir briefly. Pour in about 1 liter of water and the bay leaf. Simmer the mixture covered on medium heat for about 40 minutes on low heat.
  4. 4. Stir the dal occasionally. If it becomes too thick, add a little water. Season with salt and serve.
