  1. 1. Peel the onion and chop it very finely.
  2. 2. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a pan and sauté the onions until translucent.
  3. 3. Stir the tomato paste into the onions for a short moment.
  4. 4. Transfer the onion mixture into a large bowl.
  5. 5. Add the minced meat, breadcrumbs, herbs, salt, pepper, and egg.
  6. 6. Knead the ingredients into a moldable dough.
  7. 7. Divide the dough into four equal patties.
  8. 8. Place the patties in the fridge, covered, for about 1 hour.
  9. 9. Peel the second onion and slice it into rings about 0.5 cm thick.
  10. 10. Carefully separate the onion rings from each other.
  11. 11. Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  12. 12. Toss the onion rings in the flour mixture.
  13. 13. Shake off any excess flour from the rings.
  14. 14. Whisk the eggs with the buttermilk in a separate bowl.
  15. 15. Stir the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture until a smooth batter forms.
  16. 16. Crush the cornflakes in a freezer bag using a rolling pin.
  17. 17. Spread the crushed cornflakes onto a plate.
  18. 18. Dip the onion rings into the batter.
  19. 19. Let the excess batter drip off the rings.
  20. 20. Coat the onion rings in the cornflakes.
  21. 21. Fry the onion rings in hot oil (approx. 170°C) until golden brown.
  22. 22. Fry the burger patties in the remaining hot oil in a pan for 4-5 minutes on one side.
  23. 23. Flip the patties and place a slice of cheese on each.
  24. 24. Fry the patties for another 4-5 minutes.
  25. 25. Halve the burger buns.
  26. 26. Toast the cut sides of the buns if desired.
  27. 27. Wash the tomatoes and slice them.
  28. 28. Wash the lettuce leaves and shake them dry.
  29. 29. Place the lettuce leaves on the bottom halves of the burger buns.
  30. 30. Place one patty on the lettuce leaves.
  31. 31. Top the patties with the tomato slices.
  32. 32. Add the crispy onion rings on top.
  33. 33. Cover the burgers with the top halves of the buns.
  34. 34. Secure the burgers with a toothpick if desired.
