🍽️ British Bread and Onion Sauce

Ingredients
- 1 onion
- 2 tbsp butter
- 400 ml milk
- 1 fresh bay leaf
- 1 pinch ground cloves
- 100 g white bread (crusts removed)
- 2 tbsp crème fraîche
- salt
- pepper (from the mill)
- nutmeg
Instructions
- 1. Peel the onion.
- 2. Cut the onion into very small cubes.
- 3. Melt the butter in a pot.
- 4. Sauté the onion cubes in the butter until they are soft and translucent.
- 5. Add the milk, the bay leaf, and a pinch of ground cloves to the onion mixture.
- 6. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- 7. Let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes.
- 8. Remove the bay leaf from the sauce.
- 9. Crumble the white bread into the sauce.
- 10. Take the pot off the heat.
- 11. Let the sauce rest for about 15 minutes so the bread absorbs the liquid.
- 12. Stir in the butter, the crème fraîche, salt, pepper, and grated nutmeg into the sauce.
- 13. Season the sauce to taste with the spices.
- 14. Transfer the sauce to a serving bowl.
- 15. Sprinkle some ground nutmeg over the sauce.
- 16. Serve the sauce.
