  3. 3. Melt the butter in a pot.
  4. 4. Sauté the onion cubes in the butter until they are soft and translucent.
  5. 5. Add the milk, the bay leaf, and a pinch of ground cloves to the onion mixture.
  6. 6. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  7. 7. Let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes.
  8. 8. Remove the bay leaf from the sauce.
  9. 9. Crumble the white bread into the sauce.
  10. 10. Take the pot off the heat.
  11. 11. Let the sauce rest for about 15 minutes so the bread absorbs the liquid.
  12. 12. Stir in the butter, the crème fraîche, salt, pepper, and grated nutmeg into the sauce.
  13. 13. Season the sauce to taste with the spices.
  14. 14. Transfer the sauce to a serving bowl.
  15. 15. Sprinkle some ground nutmeg over the sauce.
  16. 16. Serve the sauce.
