  1. 1. Turn on the broiler function of your oven or place a pan on the stove.
  2. 2. Place the bread slices in the hot pan or under the grill without oil.
  3. 3. Toast the bread on both sides until it is golden brown and crispy.
  4. 4. Take a garlic clove and peel it.
  5. 5. Cut the garlic clove in half lengthwise.
  6. 6. Rub the toasted bread slices vigorously with the cut side of the garlic.
  7. 7. Break the garlic bread slices into small, bite-sized cubes.
  8. 8. Wash the celery under running water.
  9. 9. Pull off the stringy fibers from the celery.
  10. 10. Cut the celery into very fine cubes.
  11. 11. Wash the tomatoes.
  12. 12. Cut out the hard stem areas of the tomatoes in a wedge shape.
  13. 13. Slice the tomatoes into thick slices.
  14. 14. Peel the onion.
  15. 15. Slice the onion into very thin rings.
  16. 16. Add the onion rings, tomato slices, and celery cubes to a large bowl.
  17. 17. Take a small bowl and add the olive oil.
  18. 18. Add the vinegar to the small bowl.
  19. 19. Salt and pepper the oil-vinegar mixture to taste.
  20. 20. Whisk the dressing ingredients in the small bowl until well combined.
  21. 21. Pour the dressing over the vegetables in the large bowl.
  22. 22. Remove the hard bottom base from the chicory.
  23. 23. Wash the chicory.
  24. 24. Cut the chicory into very fine strips.
  25. 25. Wash the dill.
  26. 26. Shake the dill dry to remove excess water.
  27. 27. Chop the dill roughly.
  28. 28. Take the mackerel fillets and remove the skin if present.
  29. 29. Flake the mackerel meat into small pieces.
  30. 30. Add the chicory, dill, mackerel, and bread cubes to the vegetable mixture.
  31. 31. Mix all ingredients in the bowl thoroughly.
  32. 32. Serve the salad immediately.
