  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat).
  2. 2. Grate the onions and mince the garlic finely and sauté them in butter until translucent.
  3. 3. Slice the potatoes into very thin rounds (approx. 2 mm).
  4. 4. Remove the skin from the duck pieces and cut the meat into bite-sized cubes.
  5. 5. Mix the potato slices, duck meat, chestnuts, onion-garlic mixture, cream, salt, pepper, and thyme in a large bowl.
  6. 6. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish.
  7. 7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the oven for 40 minutes.
  8. 8. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes until the surface is golden brown.
  9. 9. Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving.
